Endorsed by Victor Wooten as “taking the bass to another level,” (WATCH HERE) Pipoquinha unveils a new era as composer, vocalist, and producer.
São Paulo, Brazil — Widely recognized for his virtuosic command of the bass and his musical sensitivity, Michael Pipoquinha is set to launch the most daring project of his career: a new album of entirely original songs, featuring his debut as a vocalist, to be released in 2025.
Born in Limoeiro do Norte, a small town in northeastern Brazil, and now based in São Paulo, Pipoquinha began performing professionally at the age of 11. Over the years, he has shared the stage with some of Brazil’s most celebrated artists, including Djavan, Gilberto Gil, Hamilton de Holanda, Ivan Lins, Elba Ramalho, and Chico César. His precocious talent and expressive style have earned him international acclaim and a devoted following.
His global trajectory includes appearances at major Latin American festivals, a European and Middle Eastern tour, and teaching engagements at Brazil Camp (California, 2019) and Berklee College of Music (Boston, 2024). He was featured by Stanley Clarke in Bass Player Magazine.
Pipoquinha’s discography traces a vibrant and evolving musical journey. It began with Cearencinho (2014), produced by the late Arthur Maia, followed by Lua (2017), Nosso Mundo (2017) in collaboration with Sandro Haick, Cumplicidade (2020) with Pedro Martins, and Um Novo Tom (2023), released under Umbilical Jazz Record — a top-seller on Bandcamp’s instrumental music chart.
A MINHA PELE, the New Upcoming Album in 2025
A project that transcends the boundaries of everything he has produced so far, this new album brings a unique fusion of rhythms and lyrics that reflect Michael Pipoquinha’s personal and artistic journey. Recorded in 2024 at Gargolândia Studio, the album marks a turning point in his career, placing him at the heart of the compositions like never before. With meticulous production and special appearances by major international artists such as legendary bassist John Patitucci, Victor Wooten and multi-instrumentalist Richard Bona, Pipoquinha crafts a record that is both intimate and universal.
"A Minha Pele," one of the album’s key songs, symbolizes a turning point in the artist’s life and career. The track, which explores the complexities of his identity and his experiences as a Black man in Brazil, opened the doors for Pipoquinha to delve into new lyrical and emotional territories. In a style he describes as “Afro groove,” the song blends African influences with the essence of Brazilian music, creating a sound that is both powerful and unique.
